Abstract

Melioidosis – a Deadly Disease Emerging Threat Beyond Tropics. Emerging of Global Risk Knap J.P. 1 1 Warsaw’s Medical University, Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Warsaw, Poland Przedstawiono kliniczną, epidemiologiczną i etiologiczną w kontekście ewolucyjnym analizę melioidozy (choroby Whitmore’a), bakteryjnej saprozoonozy wywoływanej przez Gram-pałeczkę Burkholderia pseudomallei, blisko spokrewnioną z pałeczką nosacizny (B. mallei). Omówiono niepokojące cechy melioidozy jako choroby stanowiącej światowe zagrożenie (emerging infectious disease) z racji jej tendencji do globalnego szerzenia się, cech klinicznych (ciężkość przebiegu, wielkie zróżnicowanie objawów, antybiotykooporność, zdolność latencji) i wielkiej plastyczności zarazka, którego rezerwuarem jest środowisko (gleba, woda), zdolnego do przeżycia w skrajnie niekorzystnych warunkach środowiskowych.
