Abstract

Leprosy (Hansen’s disease) is one of the oldest known infectious diseases and, although now entirely curable, remains a significant global health concern. In Europe, cases of Hansen’s disease are rare and often underrecognized. The disease can be classified into 2 categories: autochthonous (native) cases and imported cases, primarily originating from endemic regions. Autochthonous cases persist in a few European countries, including Spain, Portugal, Greece, Italy, Russian Federation, and Estonia, where small, low endemicity foci remain. These cases are often familial and can persist over long periods due to localized transmission, despite gradual declines in prevalence. The eradication of such cases poses challenges due to the disease’s prolonged incubation period and potential for chronic persistence.
