Ghostwriting firewall

Reliability in science is one of its qualitative foundations. Readers should be sure that the authors of the publication present the results of their work in a transparent, reliable and honest manner, regardless of whether they are its direct authors or have used the help of a specialized entity (natural or legal person).

What is a ghostwriting firewall?

The proof of the ethical attitude of a scientist and the highest editorial standards should be the transparency of information about entities contributing to the creation of the publication (substantive, material, financial contribution, etc.), which is a manifestation not only of good manners, but also of social responsibility.
Opposite examples are ghostwriting and guest authorship. We deal with ghostwriting when someone has made a significant contribution to the creation of the publication, without disclosing his participation as one of the authors or without mentioning his role in the acknowledgments included in the publication. We deal with "guest authorship" ("honorary authorship") when the author's participation is negligible or non-existent, and yet he is the author/co-author of the publication.
To counteract cases of ghostwriting, the journal's editorial office should introduce appropriate procedures specific to the represented field or discipline of science or implement the following solutions:

The editors should require the authors of the publication to disclose the contribution of individual authors to the creation of the publication (including their affiliation and contributions, i.e. information who is the author of the concept, assumptions, methods, protocol, etc. used in the preparation of the publication), with the main responsibility being borne by the author submitting the manuscript .
The editors should explain in the "Instructions for Authors" that "ghostwriting" is a manifestation of scientific dishonesty, and any detected cases will be unmasked, including notifying the appropriate entities (institutions employing authors, scientific societies, associations of scientific editors, etc.).
The editors should obtain information about the sources of financing for the publication, the contribution of scientific and research institutions, associations and other entities ("financial disclosure").
The editors should document all manifestations of scientific dishonesty, especially violations of ethical principles.

All persons indicated as Authors must participate in the preparation of the work to be able to take responsibility for its content. It is unacceptable to indicate as the Author (Co-Author) a person whose contribution to the creation of the work is negligible or non-existent ("guest authorship"). In the case of works prepared by more than one author, the contribution of individual authors to the creation of the work should be presented, indicating their participation in: A - preparation of the research project, work; B – collecting data, conducting research; C – conducting statistical analysis; D – interpretation of results; E – preparation of the manuscript; F – literature search. Group members who do not meet these criteria should be mentioned, with their consent, in the acknowledgments. It is unacceptable that a person who made a significant contribution to the creation of the work should not be disclosed as a co-author or mentioned in the acknowledgments ("ghostwriting"). The Author sending the work to the Editorial Office is responsible for indicating the Authors of the work. Failure to comply with the above rules will be considered scientific dishonesty and unethical conduct. Any violations of ethical principles applicable in science will be documented by the Editorial Office. If detected, they will be disclosed and made known to interested institutions, scientific societies and editorial offices of other journals.

Information about the sources of financing for the research and preparation of the work for publication should be provided. The participation of scientific and research institutions or other entities in the research and preparation of the work for publication should be advisable.

Authors must disclose to the Editorial Office and describe in an attached document all conflicts of interest (including financial matters) that the Editorial Office or readers may believe relate to the research or other material presented. This information will be treated by the Editorial Office as confidential until the work is accepted for printing. Then the Editorial Office may publish appropriate information together with the article.

Materials that have already been published or are described in an article intended for publication in print or in electronic media cannot be submitted for publication in the Quarterly. Publishing abstracts in conference materials is not considered prior publication. In the case of publishing materials that have already been published, if this fact was disclosed after the materials were published in the Quarterly, the Editorial Office will include appropriate information in a paper version as well as online.
