Vol. 29 No. 2 (2023): REVIEW OF MEDICAL PRACTICE
REVIEW OF MEDICAL PRACTICE

Dear Readers,
I place in your hands second issue of volume XXIX of the quarterly Review of Medical Practice. Our journal has been a publishing tradition for more than 23 years and a commitment that the content we present to you meets the high standards of medical publications. Through scientific publications, doctors contribute to the development of medicine by disseminating them to their community. A significant part of the medical community sees the need to publish scientific papers. It is also
important for medical students to take up scientific challenges, explore knowledge and produce scientific publications under the guidance of their teachers.

Therefore, I would very much like to invite you to cooperate with the journal and submit articles from all fields of medicine in the form of original papers, review articles and case reports.
At the same time, I would like to remind you that, in accordance with Article 2 of the Act of 1996 on the professions of physician and dentist, the medical profession consists in the provision of health services by a person with the required qualifications confirmed by relevant documents, such as examination of the state of health, diagnosis and prevention of diseases, treatment and rehabilitation of patients, as well as issuing medical opinions and judgments (containing an assessment of the state of health and functional impairment of the organism at the request of a person or an institution authorised by law).
In 2022, 27 million medical certificates of temporary inability to work due to illness for a total of 288.8 million days were registered in the ZUS Register of Medical Certificates. On this account, ZUS paid out PLN 26 billion 965 million in sickness benefits.

On the other hand, expenditures of social security institutions on cash benefits based on medical certificates of temporary or long-term inability to work, inability to lead an independent life due to illnesses or injuries and their consequences amount to approximately several dozen billion PLN annually. Therefore, every medical certificate issued for these purposes must comply with the established facts, the current state of medical knowledge, the provisions of the applicable law and the principles of medical ethics.

Yours sincerely
Editor-in-Chief
